ANZAC Day 2025: A Tradition in the Rain

In the soft drizzle of dawn this morning, the Paddington and Red Hill community gathered once again at the Ithaca War Memorial for the 2025 ANZAC Day service—just as they have done for over a century. Despite the wet weather, the spirit of remembrance remained strong, with umbrellas raised and heads bowed in quiet tribute to those who have served.
Organised and hosted by Jonty Bush MP, Member for Cooper, in collaboration with the Ashgrove-Bardon RSL Sub-Branch, Ithaca Presbyterian Church, and a broad network of dedicated community partners, the service was a moving continuation of a deeply rooted tradition now in its 103rd year.

The Ithaca War Memorial, a cornerstone of our local heritage since its unveiling in 1922, has long been the site of Paddington and Red Hill's ANZAC Day commemorations. This morning’s ceremony honoured that legacy, uniting residents in remembrance, reflection, and community spirit.
Among the participating groups were:
Australian War Widows Queensland
Bardon Girl Guides
Bardon Scouts
Bardo Voce – Bardon State School Choir
Brisbane City Council
Jubilee Catholic Parish
Marist College Ashgrove
Queensland Police Service
Rosalie Baptist Church
Buglar - Ms Andrea Schmuck
1st Regiment, Royal Australian Artillery

Each group played a role in making the morning meaningful—from music and prayers to wreath-laying and formal addresses.
However, this year’s ceremony was also marked by a quiet absence. For the first time in the memorial’s 103-year history, the Red Hill Boys Brigade – 1st Brisbane Company was not present. After their final parade in June 2024, the company has been placed on pause, bringing to a close their long-standing involvement in local ANZAC Day services—a tradition that had been unbroken until today. Their presence over the years has left a lasting legacy in the hearts of many.

Following the service, the community was warmly welcomed just a short walk away at Ithaca Presbyterian Church on Enoggera Terrace, where the Ashgrove-Bardon RSL Sub-Branch and the church hosted a BBQ breakfast. As the rain eased, attendees gathered over barista-made coffee and bacon and egg English muffins, sharing stories, reconnecting with neighbours, and continuing the spirit of community that ANZAC Day so often inspires.
Though the morning began with rain, it ended with warmth—not just from the food and coffee, but from the deep sense of connection that binds this community year after year.
Lest we forget.
